Gideon v. Wainwright — Right to Counsel

372 U.S. 335 (1963)

The Sixth Amendment right to counsel is fundamental and applies to the states through the Fourteenth Amendment. States must provide an attorney to criminal defendants who cannot afford one. Extended later to any case carrying possible imprisonment.
